Whether it's in marketing, sales, product development, operation or finance every aspect of a modern company depends on data and in the digital economy, data is everything. But here's the brutal reality. This is not something that companies do well. In fact, if data is so important to companies why is it that anywhere from 50-75% of the data in any company is regarded as dark data, not understood, inaccessible, rarely used. Why is it that anywhere from 25-40% of the average employee's time is spent just looking for and analyzing data and if data is so important why do companies make decisions that clearly show they just aren't paying attention to the data they have available. Even companies that are spending tons of money on data and analytics complain they aren't getting the results they expect from those investments. So, the fact is we don't understand data and we often don't understand how to use it. A lot of our focus has been on the technology, how to store the data, how to interrogate it, how to report it, and not enough focus has been on understanding what it's telling us, how it's used to drive our businesses.
